Step Into the Past at the Sibley Historic Site

5/30 - 6/1

Step back in time (but keep your modern shoes on) with a visit to the Sibley Historic Site—home to some of the oldest buildings in Minnesota and a fur-trade past that’s anything but boring. Nestled along the bluff across from Fort Snelling, this scenic spot was once the heart of the Dakota trade and home to big names like Henry Sibley and Jean-Baptiste Faribault.

You’ll tour limestone homes, an old-school ice house, and maybe even spot a ghost or two from 1834 (no promises). Tours run throughout the day, and walk-ins are welcome—just don’t fur-get to register if you want a guaranteed spot.

Grand Old Day

6/1

This long-running St. Paul tradition stretches across 30 blocks of Grand Avenue, packing the street with a parade, music, art, and a whole lot of food trucks. It’s part neighborhood hangout, part summer kickoff—where families, friends, and the curious wander through a little bit of everything.

Summit Ave Walking Tour

5/28

This self-guided stroll through St. Paul starts at Rice Park and winds past river views, old haunts, and unexpected stories—from Dakota roots to shady gangsters. It’s a low-key way to see how the city’s layered history still lingers on its streets.

USWNT vs China PR

5/31

Kick off summer with a bang as the U.S. Women’s National Team takes on China PR at Allianz Field this Saturday! It’s a chance to see world-class soccer up close, cheer for the red, white, and blue, and maybe even lose your voice yelling “GOOOAAALLL!” before the sun goes down.

Grillfest 2025

5/31 - 6/1

The Burger Battle takes center stage, letting you sample a range of inventive burgers and vote for the 2025 champ. Alongside grilled favorites, craft beer, and cocktails, it’s a weekend perfect for anyone who knows their way around a good burger and a cold drink.

Start with dinner at one of the city’s Midwest Living 2025 award-winners—Martina, named Best Restaurant in Minnesota, is a cozy spot in the Linden Hills neighborhood that blends Argentine flavors with Midwest charm. From wood-grilled seafood to craft cocktails, it’s the kind of place where you'll want to linger just a little longer. And hey, sharing dessert totally counts as romance, right?

Before or after dinner, saunter over to the Lake Harriet Bandshell, home to a full lineup of outdoor concerts. This week features Funk N Spuds tonight (rock), B & The Sting on Friday (rhythm & blues), Lena & The Loveskills (rockabilly & swing), and Homeward Bound (variety) on Sunday.

Sometimes the best way to recharge is to head north, roll down the windows, and follow the road into the trees. A road trip to Itasca State Park is just that kind of escape—an easy getaway with big rewards. Think pine forests, quiet lakes, and the chance to cross the Mississippi River in a single step. Whether you're in it for the scenic drive, the campfire nights, or just some time off the grid, this road trip delivers.

đŸ—ș Getting There

Getting to Itasca State Park from Minneapolis is a scenic 3.5-hour drive, mostly up Highway 10 toward St. Cloud. It’s a straight shot north, but you’ve got a couple of fun options depending on your travel style. For those who like a few more pit stops, the route through Brainerd adds a bit of time but offers more dining spots and chances to stretch your legs. Brainerd makes a great halfway point—perfect for grabbing lunch or letting the kids run around at a local park. If you’re more into off-the-beaten-path charm, consider the route through Wadena and Park Rapids. You’ll pass through classic small-town Minnesota with plenty of roadside gems and coffee stops along the way.

đŸ„Ÿ Things to Do

Start your day where the Mississippi River begins—. At the headwaters, you can wade barefoot or hop across the rocks where this legendary river first trickles out of Lake Itasca. Snap a photo at the iconic sign and soak your feet in the cool, clear water. It’s the kind of moment that sticks with you.

From there, head out on the Wilderness Drive Loop, a scenic stretch through towering red pines and quiet lakes. Stop at Preacher’s Grove for a peaceful walk among ancient trees, then make your way to the Aiton Heights Fire Tower. It’s a bit of a climb, but the panoramic views from the top are absolutely worth it—plus, it's a great excuse for an epic selfie.

When hunger strikes, grab lunch at Douglas Lodge. Wild rice soup, walleye, and a slice of pie will hit the spot. Afterward, rent a bike or canoe and explore the park’s 45 miles of hiking trails or paddle through peaceful inlets. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot a loon or two gliding by.

🧭 A Few Tips

  • Pack a change of clothes - Whether it’s slipping on the wet rocks or the kids jumping in for a splash, plan on getting a little wet.

  • Book ahead – Campsites and cabins fill up, especially in summer.

  • Bring layers – The weather can go from sunny to hoodie real quick.

  • Get a vehicle permit – $7/day or $35/year.

  • Map it out – Cell service is spotty, so grab a trail map at the visitor center.

Ready to roll? Itasca’s the kind of place where history runs deep, the river starts small, and your biggest decision is whether to climb the fire tower before or after ice cream. Either way, it’s a road trip worth making.

As always, happy trails!
